Aces – Future Cheer Nationals 2013

We have just returned from Future Cheer Nationals in Bournemouth that was held over the weekend of the 6-7th July.

Taking 5 hours to drive from Leeds, we arrived in the afternoon. After walking through the routine and refreshing everyone’s memories it was time to head to warm-up.

Everything went well on the practice mat, but it was clear that nerves were getting the better of some of our athletes.

With everyone working to calm each other down and encourage each other, the team waited backstage. There was a lot riding on this competition and they really wanted to hit a clean routine.

As they took to the mat, the anticipation and nerves were palpable. The lights were bright, the music started loudly and suddenly everyone exploded into performance mode, hitting a beautiful opening sequence and gathering confidence as the routine went on. Although there were problems with our pyramid we ended strong and were awarded third place.

The next day, we spent the morning in the sun on the beach and in the gardens stunting before heading inside for some team time.

Everyone was determined to hit a better routine today, you could see it in everyone’s eyes as they warmed-up.

Once on the practice mat, every stunt and tumble hit clean, sharp and on time. They really blew the coaches away!  …They really wanted this!

When they entered the floor, all the athletes were composed and ready. The routine was sharper, cleaner and although there were some issues, overall a much better routine!

Next it was just a waiting game. There were no placings today, just the announcement of who has won a bid to the Cheerleading Worlds in Florida 2014.

It came as a complete surprise to hear our name “Aviator Allstars Aces” called out as an at large bid winner! Everyone was ecstatic and ran to the stage to collect the certificate and have their photo taken!

This was such a testament to all the hard work; literally blood sweat and tears that these 17 amazing, dedicated athletes have put in this season. Congratulations Aces!

Carnegie Aviators – Our Day

Carnegie Cheerleaders in action.

24th February 2013, that time of year when all the best University cheer teams in the country come to Loughborough for Future Cheer’s ‘Saturday Night Fever’ Competition. With teams competing all weekend from levels 1-6, we knew there was going to be some serious talent at this event.

We all arrived outside Leeds Met SU bar in Headingly at 12 o’clock in our new Carnegie cheerleading jackets. For manyof the team this was their first cheerleading competition and there was an air of nervous excitement on the bus journey down. We arrived about 2pm and unfortunately had missed the routine from Leeds Celtics All-girl team. However, we were there to celebrate when they placed 1st out of 24 teams.

Coming into this event we knew there was some tough competition in our division. Carnegie were competing against 15 other teams, with the likes of Royal Holloway Tomcats who won our division last year and Brunel Blizzards who were fielding a worryingly strong male team dominance. We knew we needed to hit our routine cleanly with no infractions, especially since our captain, Heather Nelson, had badly injured her knee in the last training session. Luckily we had our amazing coaches Tats and Allie to compete with us.

Nerves kicked in for a lot of the team and although our first routine was good, it was far from perfect. We had a stunt fall and a few bobbles. After a team talk by our coach, Tats, we knew we could do a lot better. The nerves had gone and Carnegie were going out to show what we could do. Our routine was almost flawless, our dance was epic. All we had to do now was wait for the results. We all knew we had done well, but also knew the other competitors had been equally been amazing. Realistically we thought we could achieve a top 5 finish. The previous year we had placed second in this division, anything less would have been heart breaking.

Second place was called, it had gone to the incredibly talented Brunel Blizzards. Keeping our emotions in until they called our name was excruciatingly hard. But when they finally did, that emotion exploded. All our hard work had paid off, none of us could believe it. For some of us, it still hasn’t sunk in yet. This is Carnegie Aviators 4th year competing in University Cheer and only 3rd year competing at Co-ed Level 3 and this is our first Co-ed 3 win!

It was a great day for the Aviator Allstar program as Leeds University Celtics Co-ed 4 team also came first in their division. We were so grateful that the Leeds University Celtics put aside our great sporting rivalry to cheer us on, it really helped.

Thanks also to Tats and Allie for creating an amazing routine for us, to Rachel and Tim for letting us be a part of this amazing program and all the other Aviator coaches for their help throughout the season so far. Finally thanks to Future Cheer for a great day and crowning Carnegie Aviators Co-ed3 University champions!

Athlete Spotlight- Steve Parmley

I just wanted to showcase some of the other talent we have on the program. Steve is on our Coed Level 6 team, the F22 Raptors and is a fantastic photographer. He has taken some amazing cheerleading photos throughout the years he has been with Aviators and has had a photo short listed for a competition with Hugo Boss and The Independent Newspaper! To view his portfolio visit his website http://www.bystephenparmley.com or blog.
